L’évolution des villes est un grave sujet de préoccupation. Les restructurations industrielles ont provoqué dans les pays européens une forte croissance du chômage. Le passage de l’ère industrielle fordiste à l’ère de la globalisation accentue les phénomènes de pauvreté touchant plus particulièrement certaines catégories de ménages qui tendent à se concentrer sur certains espaces des agglomérations. Toutefois les stratégies des firmes ne sont pas les seules causes des changements urbains contemporains. Les villes européennes ont aussi été façonnées par des institutions et des rapports politiques. Les contributions rassemblées dans cet ouvrage permettent de saisir différents processus à l’origine de la transformation des villes européennes. Les auteurs ne limitent pas leurs analyses aux évolutions du marché du travail. Ils examinent également l’influence des politiques publiques, l’affaiblissement des mécanismes de solidarité collective et le rôle des identités sociales et professionnelles.

In de historiek van het migrantendebat hebben de architecten van het migrantenbeleid (Paula D'hondt, Johan Leman) vaak geargumenteerd dat hun visie, hun integratiebeleid, de enig haalbare is. Alternatieven werden weggeschoven wegens "te utopisch, daar vindt u geen politieke meerderheid voor". Een real-politiek die in de praktijk leidde tot de zero tolerance van vandaag. Tegenover die politiek stellen Blommaert en Martens een politiek van gelijke rechten, die vertrekt vanuit oerdemocratische principes van gelijkwaardigheid, inspraak en emancipatie. Zo komen de auteurs tot een nieuw beleidsmodel dat op geen enkel punt beïnvloed is door de extreem-rechtse agenda en dat hiertegen wellicht het enige fundamentele alternatief vormt. Men kan Van Blok tot Bouwsteen lezen vanuit de vraag naar haalbaarheid en efficiëntie. En die lezing wordt door de auteurs ook aangemoedigd. Maar voor alles biedt dit boek concrete argumenten voor een ander en beter lokaal migrantenbeleid. (Bron: covertekst)
